Setting up a new Formation class in Camino takes just a few minutes once you know where everything lives. Whether it's a Sunday morning session, your Grade School Prep classes, or a full OCIA program, the same New Class form covers it. Here's a walk-through of building one from scratch.
Find the Classes List
Head to Formation > Classes in the left-hand navigation. This is your master list of every class in the system, active and inactive; with class size, catechist, and status at a glance. Click ADD NEW CLASS in the top right to start. The Formation Classes list, with ADD NEW CLASS in the top right.
Name the Class and Set Its Size
Give the class a clear, descriptive name; this is what families will see when they browse or register. Set a Max Class Size if you want to cap enrollment, a Max size of ‘0’ signals Camino that there is no limit. Use the checkboxes to mark a class Inactive or flag it as being for adults (handy for things like RCIA or adult Bible study).
Set the Dates
Start Date and End Date define the life of the class. Camino automatically calculates the Class Period from those dates; for example, a class running September through the following February is tagged 2026/2027; so there's nothing to fill in there yourself.
Add Location, Room, and Cost
Location and Room Number are both free text, so use whatever naming your parish already relies on. If there's a fee to attend, enter it under Cost. Need to offer a reduced rate for some families? The Discounts panel right below it lists any discounts already tied to the class; or lets you know there aren't any yet. The Discounts can be set up and associated in the Discount section under Formation.
Set the Meeting Time
Start Time and End Time set the actual meeting window for each session. Tap either field to open the time picker.
Class Creation DetailsNOTE: Course Description and Notes are both optional but worth a sentence or two — the description can surface on public-facing registration pages, and notes are a good spot for anything staff-only, like a reminder to confirm a catechist's background check.
Schedule and Catechist
Before Camino can generate a schedule, it needs to know the pattern. Scroll down on the Formation Class tab to Frequency, choose Weekly or Monthly, set Every or Every Other, and pick the Day of the Week. Click CREATE SCHEDULE when the pattern's set. This is the foundation of the class schedule. We will be able to modify and add details
Class Catechists lives right next to it. Add each catechist, assign a Role, and mark one as primary.
Hit SAVE and Camino assigns the class an ID number, and a full set of tabs appear: Formation Class, Online Registration, Class Schedule, Roster, and Attendance. Everything you'll manage from here on out. The saved class, now with its ID and full set of management tabs.
Want to let families register and pay online? That's a separate step, covered in our Online Registration for Formation Classes guide. It lives right in the Online Registration tab you see above.
